My packages finally arrived, however...

...so the day was not a bust by any means. One contained several books signed by Mark Helprin. The store at his website, which I've mentioned before, offers signed books for sale at well-below-retail prices, with free shipping if you spend over $25. The Pacific and Other Stories. Just a suggestion. Again.

Comments:
Does this seem crazy? I've long been wanting to learn Italian with a grammar, a dictionary, and an Italian translation of his "Soldier of the Great War." But I've never found any evidence that such a translation exists, astounding as that may seem.

My favorite of his novels. His site has a complete bibliography of his works (pdf many many pages long), and in skimming it over I don't see an Italian translation, unfortunately. Perhaps you should learn Italian, so that *you* can be the one to translate it for the people of Italy. A noble task...

Sarah, there is apparantly an Italian translation called "Un Soldado de la gran guerra" its not listed on the helprin website but if you open the "images" gallery you can see a copy of the cover. I have had the same idea as Greg and would love to buy a copy. If youi can locate one or a translation of "Winter's Tale" I would love to buy it. I am out of Bangor for the next year but let me know and my wife can pop over to pick it up if you can find a copy. Steve Smith

Hmmm, perhaps I will call Schoenhof's Foreign Books in Cambridge and see if they can order me a copy in Italian... Steve, I heard through the downtown grapevine where you are, and I wish you all the best in your year away, and a safe return home.
