in memoriam

'Tis the season:  the solstice, and acknowledgement of our darkest days; the time just after, including Christmas, for the gradual return of the light; then the new year ahead, stretching out like a fairweather promise.  Here at our house we've got our favorite Christmas books set up in the living room - among them Miracle on 34th Street by Valentine Davies and Christmas in Maine by Robert P. Tristram Coffin.  Father Christmas, New York City, and Maine, all sharing a small table.  We also have a chair, old, but new to our household.  It belonged to my father, in his last years, when he moved from New York City to Maine.  He is far away once again, but the chair now lives here with us.

When I walk into the living room and see it, with its cheerful cushion, it feels as if I am welcoming his memory.  Come and sit, for a time, and browse in some good books.  Stay a while.  Rest, in peace.
